I still think mine works slightly better spoken because of the abruptness of the ending.

And, by the way, feel free to use this without attribution. I'm not sure I originated it. I've said lots of things I thought I had made up but apparently didn't, or at least I wasn't the first. This little observation seems so obvious that it must have occurred to someone before me.

The only phrase I'm sure I made up is, "marriage is about what's in our hearts, not what's in our pants," but hardly anyone gets that one. :-)Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1631794599733854567.post-75738658121887618052007-05-19T02:48:00.000-04:002007-05-19T02:48:00.000-04:00How about: "There is a world of difference between...How about: "There is a world of difference between believing that there is no god, and believing that there is a god and that it is you." (This rephrasing also has a slightly better rhythm, I think.)Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1631794599733854567.post-71573629158319560482007-05-18T13:18:00.000-04:002007-05-18T13:18:00.000-04:00robert,Actually, I think "you're" refers to "you,"...robert,

Actually, I think "you're" refers to "you," and "it" refers to "god." This is one of those tricky clauses where the subject is implied to be "you" or "one"--in this case, the one who is doing the believing. I suppose it would have been more correct to say "one is it," but I prefer the vernacular version.

I'm afraid this is probably one of those quips that works better spoken than written.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1631794599733854567.post-64555450850999547962007-05-18T12:06:00.000-04:002007-05-18T12:06:00.000-04:00I'll consider saying "...you're him" instead, but ...I'll consider saying "...you're him" instead, but that might risk making enemies of two groups that, on balance, I like: feminists and grammarians.Gnashhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17679372030523202284noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1631794599733854567.post-53593563298430030862007-05-18T11:51:00.000-04:002007-05-18T11:51:00.000-04:00You might want to slightly rephrase your new sound...You might want to slightly rephrase your new sound-bitey retort rather than adopting it word-for-word. The present version confused me the first several times I read it, until I realized that the "you're" referred to "god" and not to "world of difference"...Robert K Shttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13320641533825974319noreply@blogger.com
